Why ethanol can't be the solution to our energy needs

President Bush wants to replace 15% of our fuel usage with bio-fuels in the next decade. That would devote ALL of the US corn crop to bio-fuels.  It's time for a reality check.  MORE.

I agree with your statement that a single crop ethanol program is not viable. But you cannot simply dismiss ethanol as a viable energy source. There are many many crops that produce far more than the measly 400 gallons per acre that corn ethanol can. Many of the sources for ethanol are currently waste products or do not have a good market therefore would not affect the price of food world wide. Some crops other than corn can produce in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of ethanol per acre, much better than corn!
