A sales tax is an interesting idea and could be adjusted to show compassion to the poor and disadvantaged. All foods except luxury items would need to be exempted, also certain basic clothing stores, and school and course books. Other basic necessities might need to be exempted, such as heating fuel where climate is excessively cold.

The basic problem would be that it is such a radical chabge that it would inevitably run into wide political opposition. Its great merit from a Socialist point of view would be that rightly adjusted it would be naturally redistributive.
